Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up

Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up

The Vale league kicked off 2017 in style with 84 goals scored in just 13 league games.

We start in division two as Barry Albion stunned league leaders Cadoxton Imps 2-1 with Kyle Day getting both Albion goals. Despite a second half onslaught Imps couldn’t find a way past Albion keeper Rob West and slumped to their second defeat in a row.

That result was good news for Barry Saints who comprehensively won 6-2 against St Athan B, the goals coming from Joe Matthews (2) David Evans (2) Arturs Zomerovskis and Drew Burniston. The result puts Barry Saints one point behind Imps with the title race well and truly back on in Vale’s third tier. Elsewhere in the division Island Marine B played out a thrilling 5-5 draw with Penarth B, the result enough to move Marine B into fourth. In the battle of the bottom two Rhoose B came out 4-3 victors over FC Pumas B, the result leaves Pumas B seven points adrift at the bottom.

The Division One title race also took a twist as Barry Belgrade were beaten 2-0 by Sully. Belgrade now three points behind leaders Barry Athletic B with a game in hand. Fourth place SP Billy drew 2-2 with Dockers and Cogan kept the pressure on fourth with a 3-0 win over Cadoxton Barry with top six now separated by eight points. In seventh Cadoxton Athletic got their first win after three games without a victory and in some style as they thrashed bottom side Glenbrook 7-1.

In the Premier Division league leaders Vale United played their first competitive game since the end of November, and picked up where they left off with a 6-0 win over bottom side Masons Moving Group. Jay Tominey, Matt Hobbs, Ryan Jenkins, Richard Evans, Dan Hanson and Tom Hopkins getting the goals.

Second place St Athan got back to winning ways after two without a victory, Saints dismantling Dinas Powys Athletic 8-1, Josh Morgan (3), Josh Harfoot (3) and a Karl Steel double keeping St Athan five points behind the leaders. Cowbridge Town kept the pressure on in third place with a big 2-0 victory over fourth place Penarth Town to leapfrog them and go three points behind second. Rhoose continued their resurgence with a fifth win on the bounce to go fifth as they put Tynewydd to the sword 7-0. Finally, Island Marine produced a fine display to emphatically defeat neighbours Barry Athletic at the Athletic Ground 4-1, Zak Sanders, Taylor Harris, Brad Enticott and Jake Rogers getting the Marine goals to take bragging rights in the Island Derby.
