St Athan 1-2 Vale United

Vale United moved to within one point of claiming their first Premier Division title as they came from a goal down to battle to all three points on a fine Spring evening.

St Athan welcomed back Richie Humphreys to the starting eleven that saw Tony Pugh handed a started berth and Nicky Cleave promoted from the reserve team.

It was action from the get go as in the first five minutes Paul Lucas brought down the Vale attacker for a penalty, but Lucas quickly made amends by saving the resulting spot kick.

Saints were buoyed and Josh Morgan saw an effort straight at the keeper.

But the home side soon took the lead, Lucas long punt up field bamboozled the Vale defence and Morgan raced onto it to finish at the second attempt to bag his thirtieth goal of the season in all competitions.

Saints controlled the first half very well and Vale knew they would have to dig deep in this one.

The second half saw Vale come out hungry and when your top of the league the luck just goes your way. Vale’s equaliser came the way of a half clearance falling to the Saints defender only for the Vale forward to tackle and the ball ricocheted widely right into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the area.

Vale wee pushing to take the lead now to keep their 100% league record in tact and on course for the title.

With Saints tiring after their Intermediate Cup exploits on the weekend, Vale smelled blood and on the hour took the lead.

A free kick on the edge of the area was fired low under the wall and nestled neatly in the bottom corner.

Vale now controlled the game but Saints replacement Colin George almost popped up with an equaliser within moments of coming on but out his effort over the bar.

Vale saw out a hard fought win knowing a point on Saturday will be enough to be crowned champions.

Saints meanwhile travel to Severn Avenue to play Masons Moving Group.

We’d like to thank our sponsors Owens Motor Services, Llandow for their tremendous support of the club. Also many thanks to Diving & Marine Engineering, Llantwit Valet & Car Wash and Kinsale Stone Co (Wales) Ltd.
