St Athan 3-3 Masons Moving Group

St Athan 3-3 Masons Moving Group

St Athan were held 3-3 by the league’s bottom side Masons Moving Group in a huge shock result.

Despite going into a 3-1 lead MMG were the better side and fully deserved their first point of the season.

St Athan came into the game missing Lucas, Mortimore, Cox, Steel, Laing and Harfoot with Phil Morgan returning to the first team.

Masons started well and were unlucky not to be in front, forcing Steve Stock into a low save.

Saints soon went in front, Leigh Lewis’ long throw resulted in a goal mouth scrabble that saw the ball come out to Brad Young who unleashed an unstoppable left foot strike for his first of the season.

MMG weren’t downhearted and created multiple chances to level up the game but just couldn’t finish.

St Athan doubled their lead on 34 minutes, Tony Pugh collecting the ball on the right after a neat exchange of passes from midfield, Pugh’s low cross was taken in the stride of Phil Morgan who rounded the keeper to score.

Once again Masons kept coming at Saints and only their poor finishing costing them.

Saints went in 2-0 up but far from happy.

The home side looked to kill the game off early in the second half with Leigh Lewis’ flick well saved by the keeper.

Masons then got their just rewards as they pulled a goal back with what seemed like a mishit cross flying straight in under the bar.

MMG were creating plenty but simply couldn’t find the final touch.

St Athan restored their two goal lead soon after, Pugh’s firm challenge saw the ball break to Austin who played in Josh Morgan to centre to Phil Morgan to steer the ball into the net. Saints seemed pretty confident that the points were safe, hoe wrong they were.

MMG threw caution to the wind and seemed to play give up front, the overload proved dividends as they pulled one goal back.

Now it was a case of if St Athan could hang on. They couldn’t. With a couple minutes left Masons found a way through to equalise.

A tremendous point for Masons Moving Group who coming into the game hasn’t picked up a single point in ten games and not scored in three.

St Athan will be bitterly disappointed to not have won this game, injuries and suspensions catching up with them. But a poor performance and Masons throughly deserved the point.

Saints will need to up their game next week as they travel to play Barry Athletic.
