Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up

Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up

After three months of trying and failing to fill the void with tennis, athletics and golf, football is back!! The Vale of Glamorgan AFL returned with a bang, as we got 64 goals scored across the three divisions.

A lot has changed during the close season, some clubs have folded, new clubs have come in and most notably the Premier Division is streamlined to seven teams that will play each other three times and it’s Premier Division where we begin.

AFC Rhoose got off to a flyer in what could have been a tricky opener away at the Bear Field, but an impressive 5-2 victory against Cowbridge Town means a great start to the campaign. Meanwhile, Barry Athletic edged out St Athan 1-0 in hotly costed game and Penarth Town secured an opening day three points as they downed Island Marine 2-0.

In Division One, two of the newly promoted sides faced off with Barry Saints coming out on top against Cadoxton Imps 4-2. Cogan Coronation and Cardiff Airport played out an entertaining 3-3 draw while SP Billy put six past Cadoxton Athletic in a 6-3 victory. The two teams relegated from the Premier faced off, with Tynewydd 4-1 victors against Cwm Talwg, formerly Masons Moving Group. And finally Sully Sports defeated Penarth Town B 4-2.

In Division Two, AFC Rhoose B got off to an absolute dream start to their campaign with a massive 9-0 demolition of St Athan B. Llantwit Major returned to the Vale league, after a stint in the Welsh league reserve division, and returned with a 3-2 victory over league newcomers BRT Dynamos. Fellow league new boys Vale Madrid also tasted defeat on their debut, as Cadoxton Barry defeated them 3-1. BV made an impressive start as they thumped Glenbrook 5-0 and finally Island Marine B edged out Barry Albion 3-2.

Next week sees another full league program with Barry Belgrade making their Premier Division bow at home and Sully Sports vs SP Billy in Division One looking like being the most intriguing early season game.
