Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up
After an enforced winter break that only saw a small handful of games played December, the Vale league brought in the New Year with goals galore.
It was Derby day in the Premier Division as Barry Athletic picked up where they left off with a 4-1 Barry Island Derby victory over Island Marine, Athletic remain four points ahead of Penarth Town having played two games less. Penarth kept near the leaders with a derby win too as they edged Sully Sports 2-1, while third place AFC Rhoose lost ground on the leaders, to whom they have a game in hand, as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by St Athan.
In Division One, champions elect Holton Road thumped Cardiff Airport by a score of 8-3, the result sees Holton Road now 19 points clear at the top with 14 wins from 14 games, with 7 games remaining it would take a catastrophic collapse by the leaders not to be crowned champions. Below the runaway leaders it is far tighter as eight points separate second and seventh. Cadoxton Imps remained second with an impressive 5-3 win over Cadoxton Barry in another derby, while Tynewydd stayed level on points with the Imps with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Cogan Coronation. Down at the foot of the table Cwm Talwg were triumphant over SP Billy in a nine goal cracker 5-4.
In Division Two, AFC Rhoose B moved into an advantageous position atop of the division as they got past Penarth B 2-1, while second place St Athan B slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Barry Vikings, who close the gap on second to two points. AFC Rhoose B go four points ahead having played a game less. Barry Athletic B went fourth with a 4-1 win over Vale Madrid while Island Marine secures a second successive three points, defeating Cadoxton Athletic 6-2, that’s five league games without a win for Athletic who’s good early season form seems to have deserted them.
