Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up 8/2/20

In the Premier Division there was more twists and turns as this is proving to be the tightest title race for a few years. AFC Rhoose returned to the top of the league after a hard fought point against Penarth Town. In an entertaining 2-2 draw Penarth continued their recent return to form grabbing the point with a last minute penalty at Ceri Road.

Defending champions Barry Athletic came back from 3-1 down to defeat Holton Road 4-3 in a thriller at the Athletic Ground halting a run of two straight defeats, doubles from Stradling and Oaten condemning Holton Road to a second successive loss.

Cadoxton Imps eased past Cowbridge Town at the butts with a comprehensive 7-2 victory. A hat trick for Livingston, brace for Thompson and one each for Parry and Jones giving Imps the big win.St Athan came away from Ceri Road with all three points after a hard fought 2-0 triumph over Cardiff Airport, the result puts St Athan second.

The top five is now separated by just two points with plenty of games to play this promises to be an excellent run in.

In Division One, Cwm Talwg’s fine form continued as they edged Barry Athletic B 3-2. Eveleigh and a double from Kirke giving Talwg the points. Talwg have only lost once in six games since the turn of the year and the result puts them sixth.

Vale Madrid picked up a much needed win, their first win in six league games, with 3-1 victory over Holton Road B.

In Barry Cup action, the two remaining ties to finalise the quarter final line up were played, Vale United and Cadoxton Barry played out a cracking 4-4 draw at Corntown, with Caddy Barry eventually going through after winning the dreaded penalty shootout. They go through to play Rhoose Social who produces another bit of cup giant killing as they dumped out Island Marine, Premier Division leaders going into the game. Social came out 3-2 winners in a tremendous result.

The Dockers Cup this season has a new format of being for ‘B’ teams only, with the six ‘B’ teams being drawn into two groups of three playing each other once and the group winners meeting at the Jenner final. All group games will take place at The Buttrills.

AFC Rhoose B are red hot favourites for this one and they showed why with a big 6-0 victory over Penarth Town B.

Next weeks match of the day sees Cadoxton Imps host leaders AFC Rhoose with big ramifications in the title race on the line.
