Vale of Glamorgan Football League Weekend Preview 12/1/19
In the Premier Division, leaders Barry Athletic ended 2018 with two defeats, but got their title charge back on track with a fine 4-1 win over Island Marine last week, this week they travel to the Bear Field to play Cowbridge Town, a tough task as Town have won their last four league games. Last time these two sides met it was Athletic who thrashed Town 7-0 but this is a rejuvenated Cowbridge.
Penarth Town sit four points off the leaders having played two games more and look to follow up on last weeks victory at Sully as they head to Maslin Park to play Island Marine. Penarth are in indifferent form as of late having won one of the last three after a four game winning run in the league. Island Marine will be looking to bounce back after last weekends derby defeat. This is the third time the two teams will play in the league this season with Marine having won the previous two encounters 3-2 and a thumping 4-0 respectively.
AFC Rhoose host Sully Sports desperate to get their title challenge back on track with only one league win in the last four, last time out being held 2-2 against bottom side St Athan. Second bottom Sully have had a resurgence lately with last weeks loss to Penarth halting two successive wins. Last time these sides faced was the opening day with Rhoose taking all three points 1-0.
Only two games in Division One this week, fifth place Cogan Coronation welcoming bottom side SP Billy to the Rec. Cogan’s last three league games have been against Tynewydd so the change of opposition must be somewhat refreshing. Those three games yielded one win, whereas SP Billy’s form has picked up lately with a win in their last game of 2018 and a narrow 5-4 defeat last week, glimmers of hope. These sides played on the opening day and Cogan ran out 3-1 victors.
Elsewhere in the division, Tynewydd play Cardiff Airport with five points separating the sides but Airport have two games in hand. As mentioned earlier Tynny come into the game with two wins in the last three while Airports early season form has dipped with them losing the last three. Earlier in the season it was Airport who came out big 5-0 winners.
Into Division Two, title chasing AFC Rhoose B go to Burnham Avenue to play bottom of the league Vale Madrid, Rhoose come into the game having gone unbeaten in the last three and having lost just one league game this season. Vale Madrid’s form is contrasting with just one win since their opening day victory. Rhoose came away with all the points last time these sides met with a 3-2 win.
St Athan B travel to Barry Athletic B off the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Barry Vikings last week, the loss was St Athan’s second successive defeat after winning six games in a row and subsequently lost more ground on the leaders. Fourth place Athletic host the second place side having won their last three and will go in full of confidence, although the last meeting between the sides ended in a 6-1 victory for St Athan B.
Penarth Town B play Island Marine B at Cwrt Y Vil, the hosts undefeated in four games and sitting in fifth. Marine B meanwhile sit second bottom but have won their last two as they look to continue their recent resurgence. The previous meeting ended in a 6-1 Penarth B rout.
Finally, Cadoxton Athletic host third place Barry Vikings at Pencoedre. Caddy have dropped down the table in recent weeks having gone five league games without a win. Vikings have only one defeat in five and must now be considered to be in title contention. The previous meeting saw Athletic win 3-1.
