Vale of Glamorgan Football League Weekend Preview 19/1/19

To have two league match days in January is one thing but to have three is unheard of, but that’s what we will have this weekend baring a deluge of rain.

AFC Rhoose travel to bottom of the league St Athan, in one of only two Premier Division games this Saturday, in what is Rhoose’s game in hand on leaders Barry Athletic. Victory will see Rhoose cut Athletic’s lead to 4 points, while defeat would make a title challenge an uphill struggle. Last time these teams met was two weeks ago where St Athan gained a valuable point, it’s now six league games without a win for St Athan but the point two weeks ago may suggest signs of recovery for last seasons league runners up and Barry Cup winners.

In the other Premier Division game, Cowbridge Town host Sully Sports. Town’s four game winning streak came to a screeching halt last week with defeat to leaders Barry Athletic, but that previous form can still fill them with confidence as they look to bounce back. Second bottom Sully defeated the leaders three games ago but have since succumbed to successive 2-1 defeats. This is the third time the two sides will have met this season, the previous encounters ending in a 3-3 draw and a 2-0 Cowbridge win.

In Division One, all conquering team of the season so far Holton Road travel to Bryn Y Don to play Cadoxton Barry. Holton Road have won 14 out of 14 this season and currently sit 16 points clear at the top of Division One and can crowned champions with a win. Champions in January is an incredible achievement. Caddy Barry need a win against the unbeaten to keep in contact with the chasing pack.

In the quest to be the best of the rest, Tynewydd play bottom of the league SP Billy at the Butts having won 3 out of the last 4 and sitting in second place in the league. SP Billy have lost 3 out of the last 4 but did beat Tynny in the teams previous encounter 2-1.

Cardiff Airport host Cadoxton Imps having lost their last four league games while Imps have only lost two in the last eight, both against leaders Holton Road. The last meeting between the two ended in a 4-2 Airport triumph.

Cogan Coronation look to follow up on their big 5-1 win over SP Billy last week when they play Cwm Talwg at the Rec. Talwg have won 3 of their last 4 as they find form. The last meeting saw Cogan edge the game 1-0.

In Division Two, it’s the match of the day as leaders AFC Rhoose B host second place St Athan B at Ceri Road, one point ahead at the top with a game in hand. However, Rhoose B lost their last game in a shock 3-0 defeat to Vale Madrid while St Athan B got back to winning ways against Barry Athletic B having lost two on the spin. Last time they played it was St Athan B who ran out 3-2 victors.

Barry Vikings travel to Maslin Park to play Island Marine B in fine form having won their last 4. Vikings have emerged as title contenders in recent weeks and sit 3 points off top and will be hoping for a draw in the top of the table clash if they can get past a tricky Maslin trip, against a Marine side who have won 2 out of the last 3. Their previous game ended 3-2 to the Vikings.

It’s fifth vs sixth as Barry Athletic B play Cadoxton Athletic at the Athletic Ground, that’s a lot of Athletic’s. Cadoxton Athletic are without a win in 6 while Barry Athletic B have won 3 out of 5 since the clubs last meeting where Barry Athletic B won 3-1.

And finally, Penarth Town B welcome Vale Madrid to Cwrt Y Vil. Vale Madrid prop up the division but turned the form book on its head with a 3-0 victory over league leaders AFC Rhoose last week. Penarth B come into the game with just one loss in their last six and were winners in the previous clash between the sides.

Good luck to all sides playing this weekend, let’s hope the weather doesn’t hamper any games. Check back here on the weekend for a full round up.
